Transitioning commercial fleets to electric vehicles begins with establishing a detailed operational baseline, capturing vehicle usage, routes, costs, and infrastructure to inform decisions. Fleets are assessed for EV suitability based on range, payload, and replacement cycles, with simulation and modelling enabling operators to test performance under real-world conditions.

A key element of this process is total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, particularly for heavy goods vehicles. To support this, FPS has developed the HGV TCO Calculator, a free, interactive tool that builds a complete per-vehicle financial model covering purchase price, fuel, maintenance, road tax, charging infrastructure, available grants, and residual value.

The tool compares electric and diesel alternatives across a full operating lifecycle, with a Sensitivity analysis plotting break-even points across varying electricity prices and annual mileages. This enables evidence-based decision-making, highlighting cost savings, payback periods, and financial risks across different operational scenarios.

The interactive calculator is available here.
